The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Sri Lanka (CA Sri Lanka) will pay tribute to the highly respected chartered accountant, the late Ms. Lakmali Nanayakkara on Friday (6th September 2013) at a memorial lecture which will be delivered by Dr. P B Jayasundera, the Secretary to the Treasury and the Ministry of Finance & Planning.
The late Ms. Nanayakkara, who played an integral role in the progression of CA Sri Lanka, was a highly sought after tax professional who steered the tax profession in the country while also contributing significantly in her capacity as the Alternate Chairperson of the CA Sri Lanka Taxation Faculty for several years apart from numerous other roles, till her untimely demise early this year.
Dr. Jayasundera will speak on ‘the Contemporary Policy Direction of Taxation and the FISCAL Policy in Sri Lanka.’ The memorial lecture will be held at CA Sri Lanka from 5.30 pm onwards.
Ms. Nanayakkara joined TuequandYoungs, the predecessor firm of Ernst & Young Sri Lanka in the mid-1979 and worked till mid-2012 when she opted to take an early retirement long before she reached the retirement age of the firm. She was the first woman to be a Partner at Ernst & Young before thirty and was also head of the Tax Practice of Ernst & Young before her retirement.
She served the profession as the first elected female member of the Council of CA Sri Lanka. Apart from her role as the alternate chairperson of the Tax Faculty, she also chaired many other committees of the institute while also serving as a lecturer and subsequently an examiner on taxation.
In the commercial world, Ms. Nanayakkara served on Boards and Audit Committees of public listed companies contributing immensely to their respective governance process.
At a policy formulation level Ms. Nanayakkara served on the Taxation Committee of the Ceylon Chamber as its Chairperson and was often consulted when fiscal policy reforms were initiated by Government.
She obtained membership from CA Sri Lanka over three decades ago.
