Reaffirming its unwavering commitment to the nation, not only as a leader in professional education but also as a responsible professional body, the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Sri Lanka (CA Sri Lanka) launched a series of impactful initiatives aimed at supporting communities affected by the recent floods and landslides, with a strong focus on rebuilding lives and restoring hope.
In line with its commitment to national development and social responsibility, CA Sri Lanka in its standing as the national body of accountants, allocated over LKR 32 million towards flood relief and recovery efforts, following the countrywide devastation caused by Cyclone Ditwah. These important initiatives were made possible through a collective effort, with primary funding from the Institute’s reserves, supported by savings from the cancellation of several events following the disaster, and additional contributions from Overseas Chapters and Members in response to the Institute’s call for donations.
On Friday, CA Sri Lanka contributed LKR 10 million to the “Sri Lanka Rebuilding” Fund to aid
large-scale rehabilitation and reconstruction projects. The cheque was handed over to Dr. Nandika Sanath Kumanayake, Secretary to The President by Mr. Tishan Subasinghe, President of CA Sri Lanka, in the presence of Ms. Anoji De Silva, Vice President, Mr. Heshana Kuruppu, Immediate Past President, and Members of the Council.
Soon after the disaster, CA Sri Lanka and its academic arm, SAB campus, took steps to provide emergency support for families living in Gampola as well as staff of the Institute by distributing dry rations worth over LKR 1.8 million. Furthermore, CA Sri Lanka also opened its study hall facilities for Advanced Level students, CA students, and other students with a safe and comfortable environment to continue their studies despite the disruptions following the disaster.
Further, to help GCE Advanced Level students severely impacted by the floods and landslides, the Institute also launched a special scholarship initiative to provide 200 scholarships, ensuring uninterrupted education despite the disaster. The total cost of the scheme is approximately LKR 14 million, and all fees are waived off for students who register for the globally recognised Chartered Accountants programme, including examination fees.
Funded by contributions from CA Sri Lanka's Overseas Chapters and members, plans are also underway to develop and restore several flood-affected schools in different parts of the country at a cost of LKR 7 million, helping students return to safe learning environments following the disaster.
