CA Sri Lanka Strengthens Sustainability Drive with New Governance Framework

23rd May 2025: In a landmark move to embed sustainability at the heart of its operations, the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Sri Lanka (CA Sri Lanka) has launched a comprehensive Sustainability Governance Committee (SGC) under the leadership of its President Mr. Heshana Kuruppu. This strategic initiative represents a significant step in aligning the institute’s vision with global sustainability standards and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs).

The newly introduced Sustainability Plan aims to institutionalise sustainable practices across all divisions of the Institute, positioning CA Sri Lanka not only as the sole authority in financial reporting but also as a leader in sustainable and responsible business practices. This plan also encourages members and students to champion sustainability within their own professional spheres.

As the national standard setter, CA Sri Lanka’s sustainability framework is designed to support integrated reporting alongside financial disclosures, in accordance with SLFRS S1 and S2 (Sustainability Disclosure Standards). Furthermore, by aligning with global initiatives such as the UN SDGs, UN Global Compact, and the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), CA Sri Lanka also enhances its global credibility while reinforcing its commitment to national development goals.

Speaking on the initiative, Mr. Kuruppu, said, “This is not just a compliance exercise, but it’s a cultural transformation. We are embedding sustainability into the DNA of our profession, ensuring that our members and students are equipped to lead in a world where sustainability is not optional but essential.”

Key Objectives of the Sustainability Plan consists of:

  1. Alignment with Global Initiatives
The plan ensures compliance with SLFRS S1 and S2, the UN SDGs, and other global frameworks, reinforcing CA Sri Lanka’s leadership in sustainability reporting.
  2. Promoting Responsible Practices
Emphasis is placed on energy efficiency, waste reduction, and responsible sourcing across all divisions.
  3. Supporting National and Global Goals
The plan contributes to Sri Lanka’s national sustainability agenda and the broader objectives of the UN SDGs.
  4. Encouraging a Culture of Sustainability
Through awareness campaigns and training, the plan engages employees, students, and stakeholders in sustainability initiatives.
  5. Ensuring Compliance and Accountability
Regular audits and adherence to international standards will promote transparency and accountability.
  6. Enhancing Competitive Advantage
A robust sustainability framework will attract environmentally conscious students, partners, and sponsors.

To ensure the effective implementation and oversight of its sustainability agenda, CA Sri Lanka has established a two-tier governance structure comprising the Sustainability Governance Committee (SGC) and the Sustainability Measures Implementation Committee (SMIC). The SGC is tasked with the development of strategy, oversight of initiatives, and reporting to the Council. It includes the Vice President, Council Members, the CEO, and other appointed members, with monthly meetings.   Supporting the SGC, the SMIC is responsible for the practical execution of strategies, monitoring progress, and coordinating operational activities. Its members are appointed by the SGC with representation from each division of the institute.

The sustainability plan developed under this framework focuses on both strategic stakeholder concerns and operational improvements. It seeks to address key areas such as ensuring equal training opportunities for students across all provinces (aligned with SDG Goal 10), promoting women's participation and career advancement (Goal 5), fostering membership growth in line with economic development (Goal 8), enhancing access to affordable, quality education (Goal 4), and creating inclusive opportunities for both members and students (Goal 10).
