Qatar Chapter Activities

For the financial year 2017/ 2018 first technical event was held on 20 October 2017 at Marriot Doha Hotel. Session themed as “Be Ethical and be successful” and was conducted by Mr. Reyaz Mihular - Managing Partner of KPMG Sri Lanka. Further session was followed by a panel discussion and panelist were Mr. Gopal Balasubramaniam – Partner of KPMG Qatar and Mr. Richard Robert Stearns – Executive Director of Finance of United Development Company, Qatar.

Second technical event was held on 8 November 2017 at Radisson Blu Hotel, Doha. Topic was “Getting along with People” showcased by Mr. Hasan Imam Khawaja, a certified Human Resource (HR) Practitioner and Trainer.

Third technical event was held on 29 November 2017 at Radisson Blu Hotel, Doha. It was an IFRS topic related to IFRS 15 Revenue from Contracts with Customers and IFRS 9 Financial Instruments conducted by Mr. Yusuf Sayed - Audit Director of KPMG Qatar and a fellow member and past president of the chapter Mr. Rizwan Yaseen - Audit Director of KPMG Qatar.

Fourth technical event was held on 26 January 2018 at Radisson Blu Hotel, Doha. Topic was “Essential Leadership Skills for Professionals” delivered by Prof. Ajantha Dharmasiri - Director and Chairman of the Board of Postgraduate Institute of Management, University of Sri Jayawardenapura, Sri Lanka.

The CA Sri Lanka Qatar Chapter held its Annual Members’ Night 2015 on Friday, 29 May 2015 at Radisson Blu, Qatar. The event was held for the sixth consecutive year with the participation of the popular singer from Sri Lanka Mr. T.M. Jayarathna who entertained the event with his classical music of the 1970’s, 1980’s and 1990’s.

The chief guest for the event was H.E. Jayantha Palipane, the Ambassador of Sri Lanka to the State of Qatar.

Mr. Arjuna Herath, the President of the Institute was the guest of honor. Mr. Herath, in his speech to the members hailed the achievement of the Chapter in the short period of time from its inception as the first overseas chapter and fast become the most active and leading Chapter around the world playing the role model for other Chapters.

The event started with the traditional lighting of oil lamps by the Chief Guest, Guest of honor and the executive committee. A video segment to reflect the activities carried out in the preceding year and a presentation about the past presidents of the Chapter as a tribute.

The event included various musical segments, dancing segments, raffle draws and entertainment for children as well.The event was attended by the members of The Chartered Accountants of Sri Lanka, Qatar Chapter, invited guests and their families.



The Chartered Accountants of Sri Lanka - Qatar Chapter conducted its first technical session of the year 2015-16 titled “Islamic Finance – What is in it for all of us” on 15 October at the Venus Hall at Radisson Blue - Doha.

Mr. Ikram Thowfeek, a pioneer Islamic Banker in the region, currently the Group CFO of QAF Holdings Group in Kuwait was the keynote speaker. Mr. Thowfeek is a startup specialist and have set up number of Islamic Banks (IBs) and Islamic Financial Institutions (IFIs) in the region, both fully fledged Islamic Banks and Independent branches of conventional banks, from scratch. The event also included a Q&A session for the members.

Members of the Qatar Chapter participated in the event which was presided over by the President of the Chapter, Mr. Subashchandran Sundaralingam.




The CASL Qatar Chapter had its third technical event of the year on the subject “Corporate Insurance Products and the Role of the Brokers” on Wednesday, 02 December 2015 at 6.30 p.m.

Mr. Vinod Kumar, Senior Vice President at Marsh Qatar LLC, A specialist with vast experience in the insurance industry addressed the members at the OOREDOO auditorium in its west bay head office.Mr. Vinod Kumar is an MBA in Finance, holds a Bachelor of Technology in Chemical & Electrochemical Engineering, a Fellow of the Insurance Institute of India and holder of a Diploma in Commercial Underwriting – CPCU (USA). He covered wide range of corporate products offered by the Insurance Companies in the region and offered the members with vital information in taking decision on what to chose from the insurers. The session followed up with a Q&A as well.

The Qatar Chapter conducted the sixth edition of the CA Sri Lanka Qatar Premier League cricket tournament on 04th December at MIC Cricket Ground, QP, Mesaieed. This is one of the best cricket tournaments for its competitive and exciting brand of cricket played out by the Sri Lankan Chartered Accountants residing in Qatar.

Eight teams participated the tournament in two pools of four teams each. After fierce competition, the top two teams of the each pool qualified for semifinals. Beating their opponents Smashers and Doha Tuskers went through to the grand finale. The final was held under lights and Doha Tuskers beat Smashers by 22 runs to clinch the championship trophy. Akalanka Wijesundara and Sudarshana Wijesundara of Doha Tuskers were adjudicated as Man of the final and Man of series respectively for their individual brilliance on field.

The tournament was started at 7am under sunny skies and ended at under lights at 8pm. It was a colorful event and large number of members of the Chapter and their families gathered at the stadium. There were number of fun filled activities took place on that day. The tournament was organized by the Social Committee of the Chapter and it was held for the sixth consecutive year.
