CA Sri Lanka rewards 42 high achievers with scholarships for 2013

The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Sri Lanka (CA Sri Lanka) rewarded 42 high achieving students from across the country with scholarships to follow the institute’s globally recognized chartered accountancy qualification.

At a ceremony held at the Institute’s Colombo 7 premises, 12 students were awarded scholarships under the L. A. Weerasinghe Scholarship Fund while 30 others were awarded scholarships based on merit.

Students from Ampara, Anuradhapura, Batticaloa, Badulla, Colombo, Galle, Gampaha, Hambantota, Kandy, kalutara, Kegalle, Kurunegala, Matara, NuwaraEliya, Trincomalee and Vavuniya were awarded scholarships from the chief guest at the event, Mr. ArjunaHerath, Vice President of CA Sri Lanka.

CA Sri Lanka President, Mr. Sujeewa Rajapakse emphasized that both in the capacity as the national body of accountants and as one of the largest tertiary education providers in the country outside the university system, CA Sri Lanka has consistently strived to ensure that students from all over the country get equal opportunities to study the institute’s course.

“Our qualification is not only restricted to the urban population in areas such as Kandy or Colombo. Today we witnessed students from the former war torn north and east provinces also receiving scholarships, This is a big achievements for our institute as we continuously propagate the importance of this qualification to every part of this country, because we want to see students not only from Colombo succeed but also students from all over the country embark on a successful professional journey,” he said.

He noted that the scholarships are awarded from the CA Sri Lanka Scholarship Foundation which was launched in 2010 and is currently chaired by Mr. B. R. L. Fernando.

The annual scholarship programme is also part of our Institute’s corporate social responsibility initiative,” Mr. Rajapakse said, while expressing his appreciation to CA Sri Lanka members who are based overseas as well as in Sri Lanka for supporting the foundation with continuous  contributions to ensure the long term success of this initiative.

CA Sri Lanka’s Chief Executive Officer Mr. Aruna Alwis emphasizing noted that CA Sri Lanka is a 53-year old organization, and is among the oldest and most recognized professional bodies in the country.

“At present we have 41,000 students who are currently following our chartered accountancy course. Our institute attracts the best and brightest of students from both the commerce and non-commerce streams. Every effort is taken to ensure our students are provided with the best of infrastructure facilities as well as they are given access to various local and foreign qualifications for their professional advancement,” he added.

In conclusion he noted that apart from the professional qualification in chartered accountancy, CA Sri Lanka was the only professional organization in the country offering students a University Grants Approved BSc. degree in Applied Accounting.
