A total of 545 students recently graduated as Certified Business Accountants (CBA) at the 2014 CBA convocation of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Sri Lanka, held under the patronage of Minister of Education Bandula Gunawardhana and Minister of Higher Education S. B. Dissanayake at the BMICH, Colombo recently.

CBAs are mid-level accountants recognized by the Government, regulators and the corporate world in Sri Lanka. As mid-level accountants, they help business organisations across Sri Lanka maintain the highest standards with the technical knowledge and practical experience they possess in the field of accountancy.

CA Sri Lanka President Mr. Arjuna Herath noted that the CBA qualification has been formally recognized in the CA Sri Lanka’s new curriculum as an important skill level. “The new curriculum has been structured to offer students several exit routes, based on their choice of career path, before reaching the fully fledged Chartered Accountant qualification, and the Certified Business Accountant (CBA) is one of these exit routes.”

He disclosed that there is a demand for the CBA qualification specially from the small and medium enterprises sector. “The CBAs who graduate also have the option of progressing to become fully fledged chartered accountants in the future,” Mr. Herath said.

Chairman of the Faculty of Certified Business Accountants, Mr. J. M. U. B. Jayasekera said that the new graduates have a thorough knowledge and understanding in accountancy, auditing, taxation, management, business law and information technology, allowing them to serve in public and private institutes, banks and financial institutes as recognized accountants.

“We have made arrangements to provide them with continuous professional development in order to make their services more effective,” he said.

CA Sri Lanka Chief Executive Officer Mr. Aruna Alwis said that obtaining the Certified Business Accountant statues of CA Sri Lanka confirms that the graduate possess the necessary skills and competencies to function as recognized mid-level accountants supporting the public and private sectors across the country, where they can utilize their technical know-how for the benefit and sustenance of the organization they serve for.

“As a Certified Business Accountant, these mid-level accountants have received a firm foundation for a rewarding career,” Mr. Alwis added.

Students who have passed upto the intermediate level examinations of CA Sri Lanka, along with three years of relevant work experience are recognized as Certified Business Accountants. As of May 2014, the CBA Faculty had registered a total of 2642 CBAs.
